Vesalius Continuum: Εκδηλώσεις την Παρασκευή 15 Μαρτίου 2024 στη Ζάκυνθο

Vesalius Continuum
March 15th, Zakynthos

The Carnaval festival was an ideal time for Andreas Vesalius to perform public dissections. His anatomical theater was overloaded with spectators. Notables, scholars and people, who would also attend the festival and executions or animal fightings, felt festive.

No surprise, ‘Vesalius Continuum’ chose Friday March 15th to honor Vesalius with a new initiative in Zakynthos, expressing gratitude for the island’s preservation of his memory and legacy.

Under the auspices of the ‘Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium’, Theo Dirix, former consul to Greece, now visits the island as the representative of a foundation defending the interests of ‘Flemings in the World’. The non-profit organization focusing on art in science ‘Biological and Medical Art in Belgium (BIOMAB)’, and the ‘Movement Europe-Flanders’, promoting Flanders abroad, support.

At 6:30 p.m., at the ‘Saint Mark’s Church’, a commemorative plaque for the anatomist Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564) and the ‘Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie’ (destroyed in 1953), will be unveiled.
Mgr. Giorgios Altouvas, the Catholic Archbishop of Corfu, Zakynthos, and Kefalonia, and H.E. Mr. Marc Calcoen, the Ambassador of Belgium to Greece, will attend.
Preceding this ceremony, at 6:00 p.m., a QR code will be attached at the Vesalius bronze.

At 7:00 p.m., a free cultural event featuring the ‘Belgian-Greek’ pianist Elke Robersscheuten will take place at the ‘Museum of D. Solomos and other Eminent People of Zakynthos’.

Theo Dirix will present a short program of music, poetry, and photos of landscapes around Padua, Italy. The presentation, ‘Vesalian Landscapes’, was previously featured at the ‘Vesalius Triennial’ in Antwerp and at ‘Art House Ideomelo’ in Marousi near Athens.
Here, author and researcher Spyros Gaoutsis will join them with a short talk about the history of the ‘Santa Maria Church’.
Elke Robersscheuten will perform ‘Petrarch’s Sonnets 47, 104, and 123’, and ‘Threnodi I of Cypresses of the Villa d’Este’ by Franz Liszt.

She studied at the ‘Royal Conservatory’ in Antwerp and earned a Master’s in Music in Leuven. In 2005, she settled in Athens, where she immediately began teaching at the ‘Kodaly Conservatoire’. Since then, she has also accompanied instrumentalists, singers, and choirs, including the ‘Greek Radio and Television (ERT)’.
